Description

    A small evergreen shrub grows up to the height of 3 meters. The leaves are strong with fine whorled venation, straight, but with dentate margins. Inflorescence 5 to 8 cm long, with large yellow colored flowers. The fruits are bluish purple and small. In Ayurveda the plant has been described for the treatment of vitiated pitta, kapha, inflammations, ulcers, conjunctivitis, indigestion, jaundice, cough, vaginal discharge, purities, skin disease, fever and general debility.

Pharmacological Properties

Berberis Aristata have significant anti-inflammatory effect in chronic or acute/sub acute inflammatory disorders.

The root bark is very effective in painful menorrhagia ,neuralgia .

It is used externally in painful eye condition ,indolent ulcers and hemorrhoids .

In Ayurveda it is regarded as a bitter tonic and used as cholagogue ,antiseptic ,antipyretic ,laxative ,stomachic , diaphoretic .

It is indicated as one of the best remedies for correcting liver function and promoting the flow of bile, healing leucorrhea, jaundice, and enlarged spleen, inflammation of the gall-bladder, improving appetite, digestion and assimilation.

It is used as a diuretic, stomachic, immunostimulatory, alterative, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, antibilious, refrigerant, antiperiodic, and anti-tumor agent.
